Studio's, broadcasters and live engineers use compressors to keep an audio signal within a dynamic range. Basically, compression units keep the volume of the source relatively even. This is a great tool and often used heavily on vocals.

Compressors and limiters often go hand in hand as they are not different in process but rather in the degree off the effect. A limiter basically never lets a an audio signal past its threshold position and they are often used as a safety device.
